Martin_Gunnarsson_2011

Real VFX will always have a special place in my heart. The complexity involved in making fantastic visions a reality can hardly be overestimated and it is always a pleasure to watch a compressed collection of impressive CGI-shots. Martin Gunnarsson delivers a neat overview of his work at Mainframe with just enough behind the scenes footage to keep things interesting.

Enough with the playing around. Here comes one of the really big-budget showreels of the year, from none other than The Mill. This is pretty much the edge of what’s possible and stylish, so take a good look and enjoy these perfect visuals.

Elias Widerdal sent in this extremely short but promising showreel. He’s another talented alumni of the Hyper Island motion graphic design school and just finished his half-year intership at +1 in Amsterdam. Now he’s back in Sweden and looking for freelance-work and watching his reel I’m sure he’ll find enough.

Particles — they make motion graphics better. Just take a look at Tom Freitag’s 2010 showreel and tell me those VFX don’t look gorgeous. His skills aren’t limited to simulation, though. As is quite typical for German motion designers he is well rounded and does rendering, modelling and animation with great precision, too. Tom is a freelancer and currently works in Berlin for the likes of Emmerich and Pure.

When you operate with 6– to 7-figure budgets and teams of dozens, things tend to get a little different. The Mill USA has released their latest showreel and it offers a glimpse into the world of high-end production. It’s the kind of work every motion-graphics– and VFX-artist aspires to, but remember: this is the result of teamwork and vast resources — no individual artist could realize these things in a sensible timeframe.

Sparkle* Reel 2010

31
Aug
2010

This showreel from animation & effects studio Sparkle* features some interesting fluid and particle simulation works. While not everything in this reel is high end the sims are worth watching and there is obvious potential for greatness if the circumstances are right. And by circumstances I mean budgets.

Erwann Baudet from France sent in his CG/VFX showreel and it’s full of digital goodness. After graduating from the Art Paris School he quickly found a home in the more technical side of VFX and toured the international circuit of high-end production for 8 years before becoming the FX Technical Director at Animal Logic in Sydney.

My first reaction: Mind = Blown.

Digital District from France shows what modern VFX and CGI can do and it’s just stunning. There’s too much goodness in this showreel to adequately describe. I’m afraid you’ll just have to watch it.

Wait for it … wait for it …

Stephane Pivron’s showreel starts slowly, but once it get’s into full gear it really shows of some fantastic compositing. Stephane works as Senior Flame Artist & VFX Supervisor at Mikros Image.

If you ever wondered what VFX can do for your productions, look no further. Mathieu Chardonnet has a whole lot of complex digital effects to show off and gives an idea what could be achieved in 2008. Physics and simulation are the areas that take motion graphics to the next level and make a striking difference. As a technical director Mathieu takes care of bringing a real-world feeling to out-of-this-world scenes, and he does a great job.
