Justin Bates VFX Reel 2012
After posting some fascinating VFX-experiment of Justin Bates over at Strictly VFX I decided to take a closer look at his work. And don’t you know it: he has quite the impressive showreel. Beeing based in the UK has one hilarious side-effect though: almost all of his projects revolve around soccer and beer. But please, take a look for yourself, it’s worth it.

Elias Atto sent us this VFX and 3D animation showreel wich contains his works during his time at Swiss International AB. The studio is located in Sweden, but Elias is from Australia — the digital workflows make it possible. In his showreel you will find some quite interesting breakdowns of VFX-scenes, allowing a look behind the scenes of contemporary media production. I was especially suprised by the usage of Microsoft’s Kinect as a scanning device. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with current technoligical trends in motion design, things sure move fast.

What’s happening in Bollywood? A whole lot apparently: if you would care to take a look at this impressive VFX showreel from Makuta VFX you will see. Makuta is an Indian visual effects studio which is tremendously successful and even opened offices in the US due to increasing demand for their services. This showreels is worth watching for two reasons: a) because the VFX are quite good and the music is catchy and b) because you will see some action sequences that will make your eyes pop (if you don’t watch Bollywood films regularly).

Big budget special effects are the work of large teams made up the very best in the VFX industry. But there are individuals standing out, like Bastiaan Koch, founder and head of Marauder Film. He worked on so many blockbusters you are almost guaranteed to have seen his work. Two weeks ago he released his latest showreel and it feels like a compilation of all the movies I watched for special effects alone. He also won two Oscars for his work so don’t worry about him not getting enough credit for his contributions. It’s amazing stuff all around.

I couldn’t help but add this showreel from Ra-ey Saleh. It’s not as fancy as most of the other reels we show here, but it offers a very interesting insight into how much post-production goes into TV-shows that seem pretty straighforward and unedited on the first glimpse. Later in the reel it also becomes obvious how much layering even seemingly simple VFX-shots require. It’s solid, high-quality broadcast work and I find it quite fascinating.

Our first showreel of 2012 has arrived! Sam Blalark, obviously named after a lesser known Tolkien character, sent us this short but intense VFX showreel. If this is only the beginning of this year’s entries we are in for quite a ride.

And we’re back to special effects: Gurvand Tanneau shows off his latest compositing and VFX work, impressive as ever. Can you figure out how he created some of these shots?

It’s VFX-week and here’s another showreel from this most technically demanding domain of moving pictures. GUNGHO studios from Denmark sent this in and believe me, you do want to see this. VFX has come a long way and today anything seems possible.

Although I have a strong urge to not show any reels containing the Inception or the Tron theme I’m making an exception for the showreel Dan Warder sent us. He’s a senior FX Technical Director and you are very likely to have seen quite a bit of his work if you’ve been to the cinema in recent years. Amazing stuff all around an he makes it look so simple.

Rich Pernice does fine compositing and VFX work with After Effects and Nuke in New York. Have a look at his showreel and be amazed at the little details that get a VFX-pass these days.
