Shotopop 2010 showreel
Shop Around strikes again! They seem to have an endless supply of extremely talented artists and Shotopop’s showreel drives this point home with beautiful motion-graphics and animations.

Laurent Clermont 2010 showreel
Here we have another artist from France who really knows his craft. Laurent Clermont seems to be skilled at any kind of character animation; from animated cartoons in the best tradition of Pixar, through funny clips à la South Park up to video game commercials for Nintendo. He is capable of adding character to literally anything, be it objects, body parts, food or even fingerprints. It’s no wonder he recently got hired by Brokendoll studios in Stockholm as a director. You can watch his 2010 showreel over and over and be entertained, it’s one of our all time favourites.

When I get sick of the hyper-clean, ever-exciting worlds of consumerist commercial videos I need something different to get the clogged creative arteries flowing again. Thankfully Emil Goodman from Hungary provides some fresh perspective with his creative and slighty disturbing visuals. It’s one of those showreels that sticks in the back of your head for a while.

We connect tradition and modernity! This slogan used by many conservative politicians is put into practice in an artistic way in this 2009 showreel by Lois van Baarle from Utrecht. She shows us amazing hand drawn animations jazzed up by the subtle use of CGI. It’s certainly more refreshing than empty political talk.

This showreel from animation & effects studio Sparkle* features some interesting fluid and particle simulation works. While not everything in this reel is high end the sims are worth watching and there is obvious potential for greatness if the circumstances are right. And by circumstances I mean budgets.

We covered Shop Around and Volstok before, but some artists have individual showreels worth seeing. Kristoff Luyckx does not only have a bizarre name, his works are quite “interesting”, too.

Volstok is a small animation studio from Belgium. Extreme cuteness coupled with dark and disturbing humour is their trademark. They are best known for “De Monsters”, a series of mini-clips about the adventures of bizarre monsters in the real world.

The Meindbender showreel is a nice change from all the motion-graphics and VFX we usually see. This Swedish studio focuses solely on character animation and their single-mindedness pays off big: their works contain tons of character and emotion, they are truly among the best I have ever seen in this field.
Interesting fact: what looks like claymation in this reel is actually CGI, which in itself is quite impressive.

Another entry in the line of “quirky” showreels is James Wignall’s 2008 Mutand Hands video. James is a freelance art-director, animator and overall visual talent based in London. His high-profile clients like Nike, Sony and the BBC are a testament to his skill and professionalism. His reel does a great job of showing his immense creativity. I really love the glimpses of his dark British humor that turns lovable cute characters into menacing beasts.

Another great talent from Sweden, Göran Forsling had his hands in some of the most successful cgi-driven campaings of the recent years. His showreel is a testament to his many talents which range from photorealistic vfx to cute character animation.
