Jul & Mat 2009 showreel
I really couldn’t describe the work of Jul & Mat, two freelance directors from France, better then themselves:
“Working with cut up pasteboard, glued together with After Effects, we’re about returning to primary materials and rediscovering “slow. Animated toys and crumpled paper, changing faces, changing clothes, all in improbable settings, a mix of reality and post-production, of simplicity and techniques. Our videos are for sharing, are accessible to everyone and go beyond any language barrier.”
Their showreel is a rare chance to see modern motion graphics almost entirely done with analogue tools.

Sometimes it’s good to do just one thing incredibly well. i-reel, a motion-design studio in Paris, is highly specialized on technology-visualization for marketing purposes, and they are true experts at it. If you ever wanted to know how to really show off complex mechanical objects in a 3D-space you don’t want to miss this showreel.

Enough with the cutesy-artsy showreels! Dstrukt takes his viewers to the dark side in a disturbing realm of explosive and evocative imagery. Christopher Hewitt from London shows not only great craftsmanship but fantastic direction and my only wish is that it was longer.

Jeff Deson’s 2009 showreel is really special. While it looks very low-fi on first glance it actually contains some highly elaborate effects. But even more inspiring is the great humor and the creativity permeating the whole reel. The fact that Jeff is from Luxembourg might have to do something with it. I wonder if there are any other showreels out there from this small European country. I can only highly recommend this one if you want to at least have a little chuckle.

Julien Taillez is a motion-designer and art-director from Paris, France. While nothing in his 2010 showreel struck me as particularly outstanding it is the overall fidelity and attention to detail that makes it special. It’s this kind of craftsmanship that sets professionals apart. It also makes this showreel a pleasure to watch.

Marcel Ziul releases his brand new showreel and shows how it’s done. With a vast collection of high-profile clients he obviously had no problem finding impressive footage. I personally think this is one of the best showreels I’ve seen this year, it certainly sets the bar pretty high.
